A walk through Green Meadows

Take your time along the paths. This guide works without JavaScript: open a place below to see its picture and read its encounters. The moving explorer lets you pan, zoom, and say hello.

The Green Meadows, woodland, winding brook, orchard, uplands and river.

The Green Forest

A hollow tree to the left. A sunlit clearing along the path.

Explore Green Forest ↗
The sunlit clearingA hollow fallen log left of the sandy path, broad beech roots on the right and a pale rock in the foreground.

Say hello, look in the log, rustle the leaves.

Say hello to Peter Rabbit

“A little path always leads somewhere,” Peter says. “Usually somewhere I wasn’t supposed to be.”

“That wasn’t a frightened jump,” Peter explains. “I was testing the path.”

Say hello to Prickly Porky

Porky gives a very small nod. Peter is doing enough talking for both of them.

Porky smiles. There is no need to hurry a perfectly good quiet moment.

Look inside the fallen log

A small flutter rises beside the log. Peter leans in. “Room for a rabbit? I’m only asking.”

The flutter settles out of sight. The hollow log keeps its little secrets.

Rustle the leaves

The leaves stir. Peter jumps; Porky’s quiet smile gets a little wider. Nothing is chasing anybody today.

The leaves settle. Peter pretends he was never worried.

Step into The clearing ↗
The old hollow treeA broken hollow trunk with a crooked left branch, a dark opening at its roots, a fern-lined path and a pale rock to the right.

Unc’ Billy is enjoying a very unhurried visit.

Greet Unc’ Billy Possum

Unc’ Billy gives a slow nod. “A fine place to sit. I was just about to begin doing nothing.”

“There is no hurry,” says Unc’ Billy. “Even a little path will wait for you.”

Look into the hollow

Dry leaves rustle at the edge of the hollow. Unc’ Billy raises one eyebrow. “Somebody has been rearranging things.”

The leaves settle by a root. The hollow keeps the rest of its secrets.

Watch the moss by the roots

A loose tuft of moss lifts in the breeze, then tucks itself against the old root.

The moss is still again. Unc’ Billy looks pleased with its comfortable little corner.

Step into Hollow tree ↗

Laughing Brook & Smiling Pool

Follow the little falls down to the quiet bank.

Explore Brook & Pool ↗
The mossy brook bendLow cascades curl around mossy pale boulders, with a shaded path on the left bank and an alder branch stretching above the water.

Buster has found a comfortable place beside the bend.

Greet Buster Bear

Buster gives a deep, pleased chuckle. “I have been standing quite still. The brook has been doing all the hurrying.”

“Watch that little bend,” says Buster. “It never brings me quite the same view twice.”

Watch the eddy below the mossy stone

A tiny ring widens below the mossy stone. For a moment, the tumbling brook has a quiet pocket.

The next curl of water carries the little ring away. Buster follows it with his eyes.

Watch the low alder branch

Leaves on the low branch stir over the brook. A few flutter into the sunlight.

The leaves settle again. The narrow bank path is waiting just underneath.

Step into Brook bend ↗
Under the Pool’s hickoryThe broad hickory’s roots curl into the Pool beside a narrow left-bank path, with lily pads in shallow water and the Big Rock to the right.

Jerry knows this bank’s smallest secrets.

Greet Jerry Muskrat

Jerry waves from the bank. “The Big Rock is easy to find. Some of my favorite places take a little more looking.”

“Under these roots? That is a private little retreat,” says Jerry, looking very pleased with himself.

Watch Old Mr. Toad sing

Old Mr. Toad lifts his chin. His throat rounds, and small ripples spread beside the lily pads. You can watch his song even in silence.

His throat relaxes again. Old Mr. Toad looks quietly delighted with his little corner of the Pool.

Watch the water beneath the roots

A narrow ripple slips from under the roots. Jerry glances at it, then back at you, with a secretive little smile.

The reflection closes over the dark space. The Big Rock still shines out in the open water.

Step into Hickory bank ↗

Green Meadows & the Briar-patch

One meadow, many little paths. Look under the grass or beside the brambles.

Explore Green Meadows ↗
Danny’s little grass pathsAt grass height, narrow earthen passages curl around a fallen hollow fence post with an open end and a little side knothole. The old fence and meadow elm remain beyond.

Danny has spotted something you could walk right past.

Greet Danny Meadow Mouse

“A small path is still a path,” Danny says. “It helps to have a small guide.”

Danny points to the grass. “Peter looks over everything. I look under it.”

Look at the post’s little knothole

A small opening shows in the side of the hollow post. “Another way through,” says Danny, pleased that you noticed.

The dark little opening is easy to overlook. Danny gives the post a satisfied nod.

Watch the leaves beside Danny’s path

A little breeze stirs the leaves beside the narrow passage. Danny points along the ground.

The little leaves settle. Danny still knows where the passage goes.

Step into Grass paths ↗
Under the friendly bramblesThe low entrance to the meadow’s rounded briar mound opens between arching bramble canes. Brown leaves shelter the path inside, with sunny grass and the old elm beyond.

Peter is trying a very careful sort of hop.

Greet Peter at the Briar-patch

“Welcome!” Peter says, lifting one foot. “That was my smallest hop. I am practicing.”

“There is room for visitors,” Peter says. “I live here, but that does not make the whole patch mine.”

Greet Mrs. Bob White

Mrs. Bob gives an approving nod. “A careful foot is a very fine welcome, Peter.”

“All fifteen accounted for,” says Mrs. Bob. “And one large rabbit remembering to look down.”

Watch the little brown leaves

A little rustle travels through the leaf carpet. Peter holds his foot still and peers down.

The leaves settle. “I was watching,” Peter whispers. “You saw me watching, didn’t you?”

Step into Briar-patch ↗

Old Orchard & Farmer Brown’s Farm

Follow the tumbled wall from apple blossom to the sunny farm gate.

Explore Orchard & Farm ↗
Apple blossom by the old wallA gnarled apple tree spreads white and pink blossom over a tumbled stone wall. Two roots frame a low doorway and a loose wall stone lies nearby; the farm lane remains to the right.

Sammy has found an excellent place for noticing everybody.

Greet Sammy Jay by the wall

“Excellent view,” Sammy declares. “I can see who is coming before they know I am looking.”

“The farm is along that wall,” Sammy says. “You may tell them who gave you such splendid directions.”

Watch the leaves beneath the apple blossom

A small shiver passes through the apple leaves. Sammy tips his head toward the movement.

The leaves settle beneath the blossom. Sammy announces that he was watching them all along.

Notice Johnny and Polly’s root doorway

Between two spreading roots is a small dark doorway. Johnny and Polly have chosen a snug corner.

The roots make a quiet frame for the doorway. Even Sammy lowers his voice for a moment.

Step into Orchard wall ↗
The sunny henhouse gateA wooden gate leads from the orchard lane into the henhouse yard. A round water pan rests on the earth, a red barn rises behind the little henhouse, and the orchard wall continues left.

Jimmy is in no hurry. Billy has found a pleasant place to pause.

Greet Jimmy Skunk at the gate

“A gate is much more comfortable than a squeeze under a floor,” Jimmy says. “I recommend the gate.”

Jimmy gives a slow nod. “We have arrived. There is no need to hurry at arriving.”

Greet Unc’ Billy Possum

“I was just deciding whether this is a good spot to rest,” Billy says. “A thorough decision takes time.”

Billy glances toward the orchard. “A little shade there. A little sunshine here. Such difficult choices.”

Watch the water pan

Small rings cross the water in the pan. Jimmy watches them spread and fade.

The pan becomes a little mirror again. Jimmy seems perfectly willing to wait.

Step into Farm gate ↗

Old Pasture & uplands

Follow the cow-path between the bushes.

Explore Old Pasture ↗
Buster’s berry patchA pale cow-path curves beside leafy berry shrubs, a flat granite rock and the dark trees of the Forest edge.

Buster has found a promising place to remember.

Greet Buster Bear

“I remember this patch,” says Buster. “The berries were so good that I quite forgot to go home.”

Buster looks at the little leaves. “Well. I can remember them a little longer.”

Look beneath the berry branch

The little leaves stir above a dark opening. Buster peers past them.

The leaves grow still. Buster gives the thicket another thoughtful look.

Look into the shrub opening

There is a small shadowed opening beneath the twigs. Buster has stopped to look.

The thicket keeps its dark little corner. The cow-path bends around it.

Step into Berry patch ↗
The old wall above the pastureA broken stone wall climbs across the grassy upland, with a gap in the stones, a cow-path and gray boulders among spring shrubs.

Peter is looking for the smallest way through.

Greet Peter Rabbit

“From down there, the wall looked solid,” says Peter. “From here, it has a very useful hole.”

Peter twitches his ears. “I can see the way back. That makes exploring much easier.”

Look between the wall stones

A little shadow between the stones catches the light. Peter has found a much smaller opening than the path uses.

The small opening stays tucked beneath the stones. Peter remembers where it is.

Watch the grass along the wall

A few leaves stir beside the old wall. Peter pauses to watch.

The leaves settle. For a moment the old wall seems very still.

Step into Old wall ↗

Big River & willow banks

The little brook has found a much larger road.

Explore Big River ↗
Where the Brook meets the RiverThe narrow Brook joins the wider River around two pale boulders, with a small sandy bank and reeds at the water’s edge.

Jerry has come downstream for a look.

Greet Jerry Muskrat

“Only visiting,” says Jerry. “My own doorway is back at the Smiling Pool. I wanted to see where this water-road went.”

Jerry looks upstream. “There is our way back: the little brook between the willows.”

Watch the water beside the stones

A small ring opens beside the stone. Another catches the light beyond it.

The little rings fade into the broader moving water.

Part the reeds beside the bank

A few leaves stir at the water’s edge. Between the reeds is a glimpse of the narrower Brook.

The leaves settle beside the half-hidden little water-road.

Step into Brook mouth ↗
The quiet willow bankA forked willow stands beside the curving Brook, with a small stump at its roots, hanging green leaves and a dry brush heap on the right bank.

Sammy is trying a remarkably quiet kind of looking.

Greet Sammy Jay

“I am looking very quietly,” whispers Sammy. “You may have noticed how extremely well I am doing it.”

Sammy gives a tiny nod. “Sometimes the useful thing is the small thing that moves.”

Look through the willow curtain

A few willow leaves stir over the narrow side channel. Water gleams between the hanging branches.

The little leaves settle. Sammy keeps one bright eye on the gap.

Watch the water below the willow

A little ring widens beside the willow roots. Sammy leans forward, but stays on his perch.

The ring fades into the water. Sammy settles back to watching.
